📚 How to finally retain what you read in business books (with prompts)

You know how it is: you read a business book, feel motivated afterwards—and a week later you can hardly remember what it was about. Um... sounds familiar!

But we have found a method that actually works. With AI. No speed-reading tricks, no superficial skimming.

The setup: Upload PDF, get started

This allows you to get more out of a concentrated session because you are actively working with the material instead of just passively consuming it. Here's how it works:

• Step 1: Get the book as a PDF (convert it if necessary). If necessary, compress or split large books; smallpdf.com can help.

• Step 2: Upload to a ChatGPT project. Important: use a new project without your normal context (see screenshot)!

• Step 3: The right prompt plus the appropriate feature (see below).

The Method: First original, then personalized

The trick: The trick: AI is a "people pleaser"—it likes to tailor its answers to what it thinks you want to hear. So let it convey the original content first—without letting your personal projects or goals interfere (that's why we create a project without context). Otherwise, you'll skip over insights you don't even know exist.

Only then does personalization come into play: "Now apply these concepts to my situation." And just like that, you have your individual implementation plan!

After working through the material, you will create a summary to refresh your memory, quiz questions, implementation checklists, the best quotes, etc., and then visualize an infographic.

One example would be the highly readable and AI-critical book "If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies" by Eliezer Yudkowsky & Nate Soares..

Pro tip: Utilize the various features of ChatGPT

ChatGPT really has a lot to offer, and this use case is perfect for playing on the keyboard of features:

• Prompt 1: Activate "Thinking" mode

• Prompt 2: Activate "Study & Learn" mode, use Voice Mode

• Prompt 3: Activate "Canvas"

• Bonus: Copy data and generate infographics with Gemini App/AI Studio

To be honest, this method surprised even us. It actually helps us remember what we "read" better—instead of forgetting everything after a week. And you can apply the same concept in Claude, NotebookLM, etc..

The complete prompts for all three phases (initialization → personalization → anchoring) can be found here for copying and pasting:

### Basic prompt for initialization:

I want to learn this book systematically. Identify:
- The author's central vision and approach
- All frameworks with step-by-step instructions
- The examples and stories mentioned
- Critical details for successful implementation
- Common mistakes mentioned by the author
Teach me the concepts as they are presented.

### Follow-up for personalization (study & learn):

Now teach me the same concepts, but specifically applied to [YOUR BUSINESS/CONTEXT]. If necessary, ask me questions about my current situation so that you can optimally adapt the frameworks to my context.

### For the anchoring phase:

Based on the entire book, create:
1. A one-page summary for future reference
2. An interactive quiz (10 questions) on the most important concepts
3. An implementation checklist for each main framework
4. The 10 best quotes from the book
5. 3 mini case studies on how the frameworks are applied

### Bonus: Create an infographic

Create a detailed horizontal/vertical infographic for me.

Three years ago today, OpenAI released a small language model to the world. No one could have guessed that it would usher in a paradigm shift. For us, it was the catalyst that got the AInauts rolling.

Three years later: 800+ million users, what feels like 500 updates, and we talk to AI like we talk to a colleague, friend, or partner. Crazy, right?
