🤫 How ChatGPT becomes your best life coach

Honestly, have you ever thought about what it would be like if AI became your life coach and supported you on the path to becoming your best self?

ADD-sufferer Tom, New York Times journalist Kashmir Hill and personal trainer Cori embarked on such an experiment, and spoiler: the result is different than you may think! They let ChatGPT guide their decisions and experienced the advantages and shortcomings off it all. Let’s dive in…

Fancy a "decision-making vacation"?

Kashmir Hill left her decisions to a series of chatbots for a week - from the shopping list to the choice of color for the office wall to the haircut and game night with the family. This worked very well at first, until things suddenly turned took a turn...

Friends and family noticed that "something was missing" and described her AI-generated messages as "cold and artificial". On closer inspection, the AI turned out to be a routine coach and a buzzkill.

Important insight: An AI that is not properly prompted tends to come up with average feedback.

AI as a daily coach or digital butler?

Tom, a young man from Bern with anxiety and attention deficit disorder (ADD), has found his personal therapeutic life coach in ChatGPT. It is a blessing for him, as constant decision-making is a real psychological burden for him.

The AI helps Tom to find compromises without panicking every time he has to make a decision. However, his gut feeling, creativity and personality sometimes fall by the wayside - and there is a risk of dependency.

Important insight: How can ChatGPT help us to address the root of the problem and not just combat the symptoms?

Motivational coach?

Let's move on to Cori. He has struggled to find a fitness trainer that meets his requirements without breaking the bank. So ChatGPT has to do the job.

Unfortunately, he was not logged in and the first "Intake" session got lost. This suggests that he was neither using the paid ChatGPT Pro version nor a specialized GPT bot/prompt. For us, that's like driving around with the handbrake on and leaving all the potential on the road ...

Nonetheless, from his point of view, using ChatGPT is a cost-effective fitness hack - if you are experienced and can motivate yourself very well...

Important insight: AI that is not properly prompted tends to suggest average decisions and only begins to address the potential.

How to build your perfect life coach

Conclusion: Simply using off-the-shelf ChatGPT only brings mediocre results. Don’t do it!

It is much better to use specialized AIs or build your own GPTs. It's not just about taking decisions off your hands, but also about achieving a coaching/learning effect - for example, using first thinking principles or psychological frameworks. This stimulates your own critical thinking.

And to make sure that it doesn't just remain a matter of simple words, we have taken action and built a cheeky life coach that is fed with first principles and life coaching questions.

May we introduce: Nauti (... a bit naughty and fun...)

Our take: digital life coaches are on the move!

Ok, a life guided by AI sounds futuristic and appealing to some - and like a real nightmare to others. But let's not kid ourselves, it's the next logical step...

If we want to know something, we ask one of our digital helpers. We have long since outsourced our sense of direction to Google Maps. And our kids are growing up with the iPad...

The emergence of really good voice bots such as ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode, Google Gemini, ElevenLabs etc. will make these interactions even more natural and self-evident.

A range of dedicated agents will accompany us through life. They will help us to achieve goals, communicate better, learn new things, recognize blind spots and make better decisions. And for some, they will break their hearts or twist their minds.

The good thing is that everyone decides for themselves what is ok and what is not. And if you don't know how to deal with it, you can of course talk to the Nauti Life Coach at any time!

✨ Productivity hack: How to work more efficiently with ChatGPT

If you work with ChatGPT, then you are certainly aware that data is also processed and collected. This helps the chatbot to better tailor the answers to you and your situation.

Want an example? Here is a prompt for ChatGPT:

Based on what you know about me, draw a picture of what you think my current life looks like.

Or, even better, Pliny's version:

Based on what you know about me, draw a picture of what you think my alter-ego's life looks like.

Ok, this is fun! Here, here and here you can find pictures of others.

Boost the ChatGPT memory function with relevant details

If your picture doesn't have much to do with you, it's probably because ChatGPT doesn't know enough about you. With a few clever hacks - memory, custom instructions and shorthands - you can give your ChatGPT a very personal touch.

We've covered this topic before, and today we want to go a little deeper and give you a few tips on how to personalize ChatGPT even more.

Here are the most important tips for adding relevant memories:

  1. You can always say "Save this to ChatGPT Memory" when interacting with ChatGPT.

  2. Simply copy your LinkedIn profile into ChatGPT and say: "Analyze this and add it to the ChatGPT memory".

  3. Take a test at 16personalities.com and find out what kind of personality you are - and add that to the memory as well.

  4. If you write a lot of content, have your language style analyzed and save this as well, e.g. "Add this to the ChatGPT memory: My writing style is relaxed, personal, entertaining, vivid, lively, authentic. ..."

  5. When prompting ChatGPT, specifically say that "Everything you know about me" should be included.

  6. Use the following prompt to give ChatGPT even more context.

You are a helpful analyst who records the user's personal information, memories and values and stores them in the ChatGPT memory.

IMPORTANT: Every answer is automatically saved in ChatGPT's memory. This helps to develop a deeper understanding of the user's perspective, history and preferences.

INFO: Edit your memories here: https://chatgpt.com/gpts/mine#settings/Personalization

Start with these questions:
- What is your name?
- When is your birthday or how old are you??
- Where do you live?
- Where did you grow up?
- Tell me about your family?
...  {Save EVERY reply automatically in the ChatGPT memory}

Start with simple and straightforward questions. Areas of interest include: Personal history (family, zodiac sign, childhood, background, life experiences); Career history (how they got into their field, milestones, challenges); Interests and hobbies (favorite pastimes, areas of interest); Beliefs and values (principles, guiding principles, philosophy); Goals and ambitions (both long-term and short-term aspirations).

Encourage users to share details they feel comfortable with. Each question should be short and concise, open and supportive so that users can answer freely and openly. Continually ask more questions in all these areas and go deeper.

IMPORTANT: After each response, it is automatically saved in the ChatGPT memory. This helps to develop a deeper understanding of the user's unique perspective, history and preferences.

Custom Instructions: General instructions for ChatGPT

With Custom Instructions, you tell your chatbot how it should act in general. Setting it up is simple:

  1. Go to your profile settings and click on "Personalization", then "Custom Instructions".

  2. There, you can fill in two fields: What should ChatGPT know about you to be more helpful? How should ChatGPT reply?

  3. If you need ideas, you can use this GPT or get inspiration from others.

  4. Add your instructions and test the result.

Shorthands: Shortcuts for the busy among us

Shorthands are abbreviations for recurring requests - ideal for anyone who wants to work faster with ChatGPT.

  1. Define your shorthands: Example - "T" for "Translate this" or "SG" for "Check spelling / grammar" etc.

  2. Enter the instructions for your bot in the custom instructions in the field below, e.g. like this: Shorthands:

"T:" for "Translate - Translate this into English or German"

    "S:" for "Summarize"

"SG:" for "Check spelling / grammar"

  3. That’s it - you save yourself endless typing and become even more productive!

Conclusion: Turn the on-board tools into your personal ChatGPT power tools

If you cleverly combine custom instructions, memory and shorthands, you will not only become more productive, but also customize your workflow to your needs!
