Hello AInauts,

Welcome to the new edition of your favorite newsletter. Sure, today we're talking about Apple Intelligence - but also about how you can monetize your own chatbot. Letโ€™s dive in, there's something for everyone.

The menu for today:

  • ๐ŸŽ Apple is serious about AI - here's what you need to know

  • ๐Ÿค– Advertising in chatbots: annoying or brilliant opportunity?

  • ๐Ÿ‘‚ This is how ChatGPT always listens on your cell phone with

Let's go!

๐ŸŽ Apple is getting serious about AI - what you need to know

You've probably already heard and read a thing or two about it, but we want to add our two cents and start with the latest Apple news.

Apple has finally arrived in the AI age and presented its AI strategy at its developer conference. But be aware: AI does not stand for Artificial Intelligence, but for Apple Intelligence.

Apple Intelligence Prรคsentation

If you want to pack all updates into one sentence, you could say: Apple catches up and brings a chatbot and a picture generator to its own devices.

The updates can be divided into three areas:

  • Writing tools & chatbot = boring ๐Ÿ˜ด

  • Image generator = boooooring ๐Ÿ˜ด

  • New smart Siri = Amazing ๐Ÿ˜

We'll spare you 1 & 2 and briefly talk about the new Siri, which is really cool.

If you still want to see the rest, here's a 5-minute YouTube breakdown:

๐Ÿ˜ Siri finally gets smart and can help

Finally Soon you'll be able to use Siri for more than reminders and egg timers, because in addition to a complete redesign, Apple Intelligence is finally making Siri smart.

Speech comprehension is significantly better, and Siri also understands requests that are not quite clearly formulated.

The most exciting thing is your personal context - there is a semantic index that stores all your activities on your devices.

If you ask, "When is mum's flight landing?", Siri can combine information - who your mom is, flight details from text messages and the current flight status from the web - to give you a precise answer.

And soon Siri will have even more to offer:

  • Screen recognition: Siri will be able to see and understand what is happening on your screen. This allows Siri to help you - similar to what we saw in the OpenAI demo.

  • Product expert: Gone are the days of Christmas Apple tech support for parents. In the future, Siri will be able to help them directly with all aspects of their devices.

As exciting as the features are, one other topic comes up again and again:

The issue of privacy

This is a topic that has already led to "Big Brother" problems with Microsoft's Recall feature, which continuously saves your screen.

But a truly helpful AI needs access to all kinds of data, and that can often be problematic.

Apple has some advantages over other providers, thanks to its rather closed ecosystem and its own chips.

In very simple terms, Apple Intelligence works on three levels:

1) Locally on the device

The first layer for text, image and context can run on the device itself. Apple has the an advantage here, since it has been using the M1 (and newer) AI-capable chips that can do this for a while now.

For simple tasks, a small local model with approx. 3 billion parameters is used.

2) Your own Apple Private Cloud

More complex tasks require more powerful models, and this does not yet work completely independently.

Apple is therefore building its own data centers, which will again only be equipped with Apple hardware. It will run models at the level of GPT4 or Mixtral 8ร—22B.

This means that even more complex requests remain in the Apple ecosystem, which, according to Apple, "never" stores customer data.

Since Apple really has the entire value chain in-house - from client software to hardware, to data centers, to infrastructure in the data centers - this is definitely a plausible possibility.

3) External services such as OpenAI

As a final layer (probably for the more complex things), Apple Intelligence can access other tools. The first step here is a partnership with OpenAI.

Apple remains independent to a certain extent and can also pass on the legal risk to partners. To be able to use OpenAI, you have to actively confirm it - and OpenAI will not train on the data, it is said.

In conclusion, one thing remains to be said about privacy and data protection: Apple certainly does it better than many others. But we still have to get used to the fact that if we really want to make full use of AI, we have to relinquish some of our data sovereignty.

Therefore, mixed feelings remain ...

However, it's fair to say that Apple, Google, Microsoft and others already โ€˜knowโ€™ our emails, understand our photos and know who we are and who our family is, etc.

Our take: Apple AI will be really helpful!

Is Apple Intelligence a game changer?

Yes, if the feature is as good as advertised, then Apple and Siri will become a really good assistant that makes our lives easier. Everything else is basically the same as with the others.

We are definitely glad that Apple is finally catching up in this field and that we don't have to migrate completely to Microsoft.

๐Ÿค– Advertising in chatbots: annoying or brilliant opportunity?

Chatbots are the epitome of the current AI revolution. We all use them, probably on a daily basis. Some even build their own bots, and a few even make a small fortune with them.

One of the most popular business models for earning a little money with chatbots is to offer them on a monthly subscription basis.

In other words: you build a fun horoscope chatbot, for example, and charge a few bucks a month to use it. This is possible, for example, with a tool like MindStudio.

Since OpenAI still does not share in the revenue of chatbots created and trained by users on its own platform, there are some other ways to monetize chatbots directly in ChatGPT:

Advertising!

As you can see in the screenshot below from the Midjourney Prompt GPT, the bot delivers the promised prompts - but also two types of advertising.

1) Affiliate links

The first link after the prompts is a hint that you should upscale the images generated on Midjourney with Gigapixel AI.

If someone clicks on the link and uses Gigapixel AI, the GPT maker receives a commission.

2) Classic advertising via sponsored text

At the very bottom you can also find an area marked Sponsored.

It refers to a journaling app that you can use to advance your career. Not exactly in line with the topic of the GPT.

Here, too, the GPT maker receives a kickback - either a fixed amount, or based on clicks when someone views the journaling app.

Annoying or a great sales opportunity?

The fact is: chatbots are often used - but only as long as they are free. It is a huge challenge to get people to (repeatedly) pay you for a chatbot you have created.

We find the advertising option very exciting because it doesn't hurt anyone and can be a solid source of income if you build a good chatbot.

How to add advertising to your chatbot

Basically, it's not that difficult to add advertising to your own chatbot. We took a closer look at the instructions for the example bot.

You can add some revenue streams to your chatbot, for example like this:

Affiliate products:

Here you simply look for suitable offers (either via ChatGPT/Google, or on marketplaces such as OfferVault or Clickbank), and see if they offer an affiliate program.

Register with the affiliate partner program and youโ€™ll receive your own personal links, which you put into your bot's instructions.

It is important that you define precise instructions as to when the bot should issue references to these products, to ensure it does not become too much.

Sponsored Links:

It's even easier with sponsored links! For example, there are providers such as Adzedek, the service from the example above. You can easily connect Adzedek to your chatbot via API and then display ads.

We are certain: advertising in chatbots is here to stay!

๐Ÿ‘‚ This is how ChatGPT always listens on the cell phone

Finally, a quick feature update for all those who use ChatGPT on their phone.

Recently, it has become possible for ChatGPT to always be listening, and you can talk to it even if you do NOT have the app open. Even when your cell phone is on standby!

You can easily activate this in the settings:

A cool feature, especially if you need information in other apps where ChatGPT is supposed to help you.

However, we recommend deactivating it again when you no longer use it. After all, giving an external app full permission to always listen in is somehow strange.

(Hi Alexa, in the living room ๐Ÿ˜‰!)

And thatโ€™s a wrap! But no need to be sad. The AInauts will be back soon, with new content for you.
